Cake Pops - AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!

Just having a vent here. Tried to make cake pops, was going to take a picture and post on how they should NOT look - mine look like chocolate brains dipped in mud with a white stick protruding...... so NOT GOOD!!! Hmm, might just have to eat the "dough" and lick the chocolate out of the melting bowl. Damn, I wanted to make them and they looked nice, now have gluggy mess!!

OK, vented now, have a great weekend all!!! And do not attempt to make cake pops while 4 year old is trying to play Wii game (and constantly asking you to help him get to the next level!)

That is so funny. You are a brave woman just attempting them. It seems like such a lot of work for such a little bite size piece of sweet. I'm with Caroline would still love to see photos. How fun! I have now discovered that children and cake making cannot happen at the same time. In my house it all gets done between 8:00pm - midnight and sometimes later. I think you are brave attemptimg all of the above - Well Done!

glad to see im not the only one baking into the middle of the night, as long as my kids get a beater or a spoon to lick im safe for a little while.

ps.... i really like the idea behind the cake pops, how are they made exactly?

so from my question you will guess i am such a newbie, but what are cake pops?

Posted By bubble and sweet 30 Jul 2010

I so had that with my first few. I know they are super expensive but I do find that the wilton melts work much better that the quality chocolate. See these pics with the pink melts (and they are much smoother if you have time to tap the excess off):

The ones I tried with normal chocolate were so lumpy.

There has been a post on here that said Australian chocolate was the same as the melts. I tried Nestle Melts with no joy. Might try the stuff from Roberts confectionery next.

may i vent with u?! i attempted cake pops last wk. was pretty happy w/ making the balls and puttin them on sticks. then of course came the dipping. i only had sicao choc and so i used that (i melted the choc w/ copha as prev suggested by others). i thought it was going pretty well but noooo. choc was too thick and after doing a few i just kept thinking "how the heck does everyone else make it look so perfectly round and nicely dipped?!" .. anyway i gave up the dipping so i have a whole lot of pops in the freezer :). bought some candy melts and so am hoping pops will turn out better :)

bubble and sweet .. i tried the nestle melts (i was told by roberts confectionary that its same as candy melts) but no luck either! i saw the roberts conf choc at spotlight and was going to buy them to try out but since i just bought the wilton melts, i might try that one first.

and ladies .... thank god im not the only one that starts doing cakes after kids have gone to bed :)

I should put some pics up of the ones I made a couple of weeks ago. I used the nestle melts, melted the choc first THEN added melted cohpa until I got the right consistency.

It is time consuming and ys, I'm the same...cake making done late at night...no point otherwise as it wouldn't end up being for human cosumption!...lol

Posted By JhoaneeB 30 Jul 2010

Kats, did u use a lot of copha? i just couldn't get the consistency right.
It's dangerous having those treats around! You just tend to keep eating them (well i did anyway lol!)since theyre bite-size and before you know it, you've pretty much eaten an equivalent of a whole cake lol!

I also have had terrible times with cake pops! but i always get sucked back in to trying them again when a cute design pops up!

I made some the other day, banana cake with cream cheese icing...and they turned out really nice (surprise, surprise).

I did use normal white chocolate (not the stuff you eat) and added a little bit of copha and turned out great..but not as perfect as the ones you see on Bakarella website...

I make my cake pops with dark lindt choc.
I melt my choc. dip the cake balls into the choc. and within a few minutes the choc. sets.

Here's a pic.

beautiful Shamsd!

Posted By Kats 30 Jul 2010

OMG! Shamsd thos are perfect little balls. I tried doing the bals but just couldn't get them right. It was easier with the sticks in so you culd wave it around in the chocolate. What's your tip for just balls?

JB - I thnk I used about 30 - 50g. I melted it and then just aded small amounts at a time. When mixing it I kept 'cutting'through the chocolate until it was combined...then dripping it off the spatula...and perhaphs having a sneaky taste too.

And yes, VERY morish!!! YOu can never have just one.

Posted By JhoaneeB 30 Jul 2010

Kats, i did that too but probably just didn't have the patience. Expected too much for my 1st go hehehe

Posted By ShamsD 30 Jul 2010

I made the cake balls and placed it in the fridge till it was cold...about 1/2 an hour.
Poked some toothpicks into them and then dipped into choc.
I let them dry standing on styrofoam and once set removed the toothpicks.

After letting the cake balls cool/harden in the fridge, i noticed that they weren't perfectly round (had a side that was a bit flat). Does that mean i put too much frosting and made it too soft? Everybody else's seem to be soo perfectly round and smooth, like urs Shamsd.

So glad I am not the only one that makes really ugly cake pops! Will have to try the copha!! Have to do something with those left over cake scraps!
